Dreo 20L/Day Smart Dehumidifier: our review and alternatives

The Dreo 20L is a smart compressor dehumidifier that pairs a 20 litre a day extraction rate with a low noise rating and full app scheduling. It is a compact machine aimed at people who want to run a dehumidifier in the rooms they actually live in.

I'd pick the Dreo 20L for a bedroom, home office or flat that needs quiet, app-scheduled moisture control, but not for a very cold garage

Choose it if

You want a quiet, compact 20 litre unit with an app that schedules, a laundry mode and a drain hose option.

Skip it if

You want a tank big enough to run all day without a hose (3.4 L) or very dry air for a cold, damp outbuilding.

What the numbers say about the Dreo 20L/Day Smart Dehumidifier

1.Quiet for its class

A 38 dB sound-pressure rating and three fan speeds make it one of the quieter 20 litre machines, with 50 dB quoted as sound power.

2.App scheduling that works

The Dreo app shows live humidity, sets a target in auto mode and runs a weekly schedule, which cuts running time to when you need it.

3.Efficient at up to 2.3 L per kWh

A 355 W motor and a high efficiency figure keep the cost per litre low, even on heavy laundry days.

4.Compact, with castors and a handle

At 50 cm tall and 12.4 kg it rolls between rooms and tucks into a corner.

A real-life example. Picture a first-floor flat with a bedroom that gets damp in winter. You schedule the machine for 9pm to 11pm, the app holds 50% and the window stays dry by morning.

How to read these figures

The 20 litres a day is the extraction rate under the maker's test conditions. At typical UK room temperatures of 15-20°C expect a lower figure in typical UK rooms.

The 38 dB figure is sound pressure at a distance. The 50 dB sound power figure is the one to compare with other brands' ratings.

How much does it cost to run?

The manufacturer rates it at 355 W. That is a ceiling: the unit does not draw that power all the time, so the real cost is often lower. Indicative estimate over 30 days.

Running time per daykWh per monthCost per month
2 h21.3 kWh£5.22
4 h42.6 kWh£10.44
8 h85.2 kWh£20.87

Work it out with your own tariff

Result: about £10.44 a month (42.6 kWh).

Worked example. At 355 W, 4 hours a day for 30 days is 42.6 kWh, about £10.44 at the reference price of 24.5p per kWh.

When to choose it over another model

Choose it over the Pro Breeze 20L OmniDry if you want the quieter, more compact machine with better app control. Choose the Pro Breeze if you want the larger tank and a Which? award.

Our verdict on this Dreo dehumidifier: 4.6/5

Buy the Dreo 20L if you want a quiet, compact 20 litre dehumidifier with proper app scheduling for a bedroom, home office or flat, and you will use the drain hose for long runs. If you want the bigger tank and an independent award, the Pro Breeze 20L OmniDry is the better fit. If you want an air purifier built in, look at the Devola DVHA20L.

Who this Dreo damp extractor is for, and how to use it at home

In a bedroom, set the app to auto at about 50% and use the schedule to run the machine for an hour or two before bed. Overnight, the humidity will sit steady and the fan will only run in short bursts. The 38 dB sound-pressure figure means that on the low speed it fades into the background for most sleepers, but a machine this size moving 20 litres a day is never completely silent, so keep it a metre or so from the bed.

For laundry, close the door of a small room, put the airer in the middle and the dehumidifier in the corner, and use the laundry mode. A load of washing will be dry in several hours, and the compressor will often collect a lot of water in that time. Because the tank is 3.4 litres, fit the drain hose for laundry sessions so the machine does not stop part-way through.

For a bathroom or shower room, run the machine after showers with the door shut. Steam and condensation clear quickly, and the humidity reading on the app tells you when it has finished. Keep the unit out of splash range and leave a gap around the grille.

For a home office or a room that is only a little damp, auto mode at 55% is enough. Do not set a target below about 40%, as the compressor will run constantly without helping, and the room becomes uncomfortably dry.

A 20 litre compressor can lower a normal room to the mid-40s percent, but not much lower. If you need very dry air, such as a greenhouse or a tool store, a desiccant model is the right choice. Empty and rinse the tank every couple of weeks and wash the filter when dust builds up, drying it completely before refitting.

About Dreo's moisture extractor range

Dreo is best known for fans, heaters and air purifiers, and its dehumidifier brings the same design approach: a tidy, slim body, a clear display and an app that works. The 20 litre model is a compressor unit, rated to remove up to 20 litres of water a day from the air, with an efficiency of up to 2.3 litres per kWh.

The headline figure is the noise. Dreo quotes 38 dB as the sound pressure level, measured at a distance, and 50 dB as the sound power level, which is the figure that compares fairly with other manufacturers. On either number it is on the quieter side of the 20 litre class, and it has three fan speeds to trade noise against speed.

Control is by a digital panel or by the Wi-Fi app. The app shows the live humidity, lets you set a target in auto mode, and supports a full weekly schedule, so you can have the machine run only when you are out or before you wake. A laundry mode runs the fan hard to dry washing, and a 24-hour timer covers simple jobs.

At 12.4 kg it is not light, but the castors and the carry handle make it easy to shift between rooms. The 3.4 litre tank is the compromise. It shuts the machine off when full, so for long sessions you should use the continuous drainage option.

It suits flats and family homes where one machine has to do bedroom duty overnight and laundry duty by day. It is less suitable for a large cold garage or for buyers who want a tank big enough to run for a full day unattended.

Dreo dehumidifier: pros and cons in detail

The Dreo 20L is strongest on the combination of noise, size and software: a low sound rating, a compact body and a Wi-Fi app with real scheduling rarely come together in a 20 litre machine. The cost is a small 3.4 litre tank that needs a drain hose for long sessions, a headline noise figure that is sound pressure rather than sound power, and a newer name with fewer years of UK track record.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Dreo 20L quiet enough for a bedroom?+

It is one of the quieter 20 litre models. Dreo quotes 38 dB sound pressure and 50 dB sound power, and there are three fan speeds. On the low speed most people will find it a steady background hum, and the schedule lets you run it before bed so it is not working while you sleep.

Does it work with Alexa or Google Home?+

Control is through the Dreo app over Wi-Fi, with scheduling and a live humidity read-out. Check the listing for the current voice-assistant support, as it varies by firmware and region.

Can it drain continuously?+

Yes. The 3.4 litre tank shuts the unit off when full, so for long sessions run the continuous drain hose to a sink, shower tray or floor drain. Make sure the hose slopes downhill with no loops.

How well does it dry laundry?+

It has a dedicated laundry mode. In a closed small room a load of washing dries in several hours. Place the airer so air can move around the clothes, and use the drain hose so the tank does not interrupt the cycle.

How big a room can it cover?+

A 20 litre unit suits a medium to large room or a small flat. For a very large open-plan space or a whole house, a 30 or 40 litre machine such as the electriQ 40L Smart or the Pro Breeze 40L OmniDry WiFi is more realistic.

Will it get a very damp room below 40%?+

Not reliably. A compressor dehumidifier gets a normal room to the mid-40s percent, and struggles to go lower, especially in a cooler space. For very dry air a desiccant unit is the better tool.

How does it compare with the Pro Breeze 20L OmniDry and the Devola DVHA20L?+

All three are 20 litre compressor units. The Dreo is the most compact and the quietest of the group on paper, with the strongest app. The Pro Breeze 20L OmniDry has the bigger tank and a Which? award, and the Devola DVHA20L adds an air purifier.

Do I need to clean the filter?+

Yes. Wash the intake filter every few weeks, and empty and rinse the tank. Let the filter dry fully before putting it back. A clogged filter lowers extraction and raises noise.
