Choose it if

You have a flat, a bedroom with condensation or a small house, and you want a quiet unit that is cheap to run.

Skip it if

You have a large or very damp home: 6 litres a day in a UK room is modest and the tank is only 2.5 litres.

What the numbers say about the Meaco MeacoDry Arete One 10L

1.10 L/day at test conditions

The rating is at 30°C and 80% humidity. Meaco's figure for 27°C and 60% is 6 litres a day.

2.35 dB(A) on the lowest setting

Quiet enough for a bedroom, and night mode turns every light off.

3.Five-year warranty

The longest cover we have seen from a major dehumidifier brand in the UK.

4.4p an hour to run

163 watts and a built-in H13 HEPA filter in a compact 10.7 kg body.

A real-life example. Picture a one-bedroom flat with condensation on the bedroom windows. You run Smart Humidity at 55% and let it switch itself off.

How to read these figures

10 litres a day is a lab rating. At 27°C and 60% humidity, Meaco quotes 6 litres a day.

Meaco quotes about 4p an hour to run at 26.32p/kWh. The noise level of 35 dB(A) is on the lowest of two speeds.

When to choose it over another model

Choose it over the Arete One 12L if you want the lowest price and lowest running cost in the range. Pick the Arete Two 10L instead if you want Wi-Fi control and three fan speeds.

Our verdict on this Meaco moisture control unit: 4.4/5

Buy the Arete One 10L if you live in a flat or small house, want a quiet unit for a bedroom, and value a long warranty at a low price. If you want app control and a third fan speed, step up to the Arete Two 10L. For a regular-sized home, the Arete One 20L has the capacity you will need.

Who this Meaco moisture extractor is for, and how to use it at home

In a bedroom or small living room, set Smart Humidity mode to 50-55%. The unit switches itself off when it reaches that level and restarts when humidity rises, so it does not run all night.

For laundry in a small room, use the dedicated mode. Keep the machine about a metre from the clothes and close the door. A small unit takes noticeably longer than a 20L model on a full airer, so do not overload it.

In a bedroom, night mode turns off the lights and alerts and drops the fan to its quietest setting. At 35dB it is a low steady hum. Try it for a night or two before relying on it.

The 2.5L tank fills quickly in a very damp room. If you do not want to empty it daily, fit a garden hose to the drainage adaptor (the hose is not included) and run it to a sink or drain.

It works from 5°C upwards, but like every compressor model it extracts less as the room gets colder. For an unheated room in winter, a desiccant unit such as the Meaco DD8L Pro will do better.

About Meaco's dehumidifier range

Meaco is a British brand, and the Arete One 10L is one of the two smaller units it added to the Arete range after the 20L and 25L models won Which? Best Buy awards. It is a compressor dehumidifier with a built-in H13 HEPA filter, two fan speeds and simple controls.

The 10 litres a day figure is measured at 30°C and 80% relative humidity. Meaco's specification also gives 6 litres a day at 27°C and 60% humidity, which is the more useful number for a UK room, and about 4.3 litres at 20°C and 60%. That is right for one damp room or a small flat, not for a whole house.

It weighs 10.7kg, stands 47cm tall and draws 163 watts, so it costs about 4p an hour to run. The 2.5L tank can be emptied from either side, though it has no carry handle. Wall brackets are available separately if you want it off the floor.

It suits renters in a flat, a bedroom with condensation, a small bathroom-adjacent room, an office or a caravan. If you have a 3-4 bedroom house with wet laundry every day, step up to the 20L model.

Meaco moisture control unit: pros and cons in detail

The Arete One 10L is a small, quiet, long-guaranteed unit. Its strengths are the 35dB lowest setting, the 5-year warranty and the 4p-an-hour running cost. The trade-offs are the modest 6 litres a day manufacturer-quoted extraction at 27°C and 60% humidity, a small tank without a handle and two fan speeds with no app.

Frequently asked questions

How much water does the Arete One 10L actually remove?+

The 10 litres a day figure is a lab rating at 30°C and 80% humidity. Meaco's own specification gives 6 litres a day at 27°C and 60% humidity and about 4.3 litres at 20°C and 60%, which is closer to a typical UK room.

What size room is it suitable for?+

Meaco positions it for flats, studio apartments, small houses, single rooms and offices. For a 3+ bedroom house, a 20L or 25L model is a better fit.

Is it quiet enough for a bedroom?+

At 35dB on its lowest setting it is one of the quietest units of its size, and night mode turns off the lights and alerts.

Can I wall-mount it?+

Yes. The 10L supports wall mounting, but the brackets are sold separately. That is useful in an office, studio or laundry area, especially with continuous drainage.

How much does it cost to run?+

Meaco quotes about 4p an hour at 26.32p/kWh, with 163 watts power consumption, so a few hours a day adds very little to your bill.

Does the tank have a handle?+

No. Meaco notes that the 10L tank does not come with a handle, but it can be emptied from either side.

What is the difference between the Arete One 10L and the Arete Two 10L?+

The Arete Two adds a DC motor, three fan speeds, an LCD display, Wi-Fi app control and voice control, and runs a little cheaper. The Arete One keeps simple controls and costs less.

How long is the warranty?+

Meaco gives a 5-year warranty on the Arete range.
